Timesaver: Lift Weights to Lose Weight
Health and fitness experts are exhorting us to incorporate weight training into our fitness
programs--it's especially important for women for building bone density, but the truth is that working
with weights increases your metabolism (this means more fat-burning) all day. As
with the cardio workout, Smith has designed two 20-minute workouts; on hectic days, doing the first
alone is plenty, and on other days doing both programs will combine to help you see fast results. The
movements are basic (including the all-important single-arm rows, key to building back muscles and
keeping posture correct), and the delivery inviting and completely unintimidating. If you've been
thinking of beginning a weight program, this (and a couple of sets of inexpensive hand weights) is

You want a tough, advanced workout? Boxing aerobic workouts are hot for athletic cross-training,
aerobic conditioning, and both upper- and lower-body strengthening. Boxing offers a good
cross-training alternative to step and aerobic dance, which are all leg work. Michael Olajide Jr.,
12-year boxing veteran and former World Middleweight contender, is the real instructor in this
workout, assisted by Kathy Smith. Olajide first demonstrates the correct form of basic boxing
moves such as jab, power punch, hook, and upper cut, which involve the whole upper body and the
abs, not just the arms. Then he leads a killer-paced aerobic routine requiring stamina, strength,
agility, speed, and coordination. The fast upper-body moves turn into whole-body boxing moves,
both stationary and moving, that also work the legs, thighs, and buttocks. The cardiovascular
workout is intense, fast, and relentless, designed for the experienced aerobic exerciser.

Pregnancy Workout
Kathy Smith has been around a while in the world of fitness videos, and with good reason. Her calm,
authoritative manner, flawless timing, emphasis on proper form, and responsible directions put her
entire fitness series a cut above most celebrity workouts. Pregnancy Workout is no exception.
Smith and five workout buddies (all of them appearing to be well past the fifth month of pregnancy)
demonstrate a good 50-minute prenatal workout, with an ample warmup period, a cardio section
that includes sufficient upper-body work, plenty of safe abdominal and pelvic-floor exercises, and an
active relaxation period (which some avid aerobicizers may find a bit too long). Smith uses props
such as chairs and pillows to allow effective exercise while maintaining an emphasis on safety and
comfort.

Kathy Smith Pilates for Abs
Pilates is an intense, controlled way of working your core muscles--the back and abdominal
muscles that stabilize your body--using technique, breathing, and concentration. Veteran
instructor Kathy Smith leads an effective 30-minute Pilates workout. The 8-minute warm-up
teaches the essentials of Pilates, followed by a 22-minute Pilates routine that targets
the abdominals. Smith continues to emphasize technique, breathing, and proper position through
each exercise, making sure you understand how to get the most out of each movement. This is an
excellent introduction to Pilates, especially--but not exclusively--for beginners to this
discipline.

Kickboxing Workout
Veteran aerobics instructor Kathy Smith jumps aboard the Tae-Bo bandwagon with her punchy
video Kickboxing Workout and adds her own brand of California-girl pep to the popular
martial-arts routine. Accompanied by martial-arts champ Keith Cooke, Smith presents a terrific,
high-adrenaline workout, based on the punches, jabs, kicks, and squats that Tae-Bo lovers will
recognize, with more polished production values and a more appealing music track. Smith and
Cooke alternate leading the onscreen group and point out several low-impact alternative moves for
beginners. The 45-minute workout is a great fat-burner, and those side kicks will shape those hips in
no time.

Functionally Fit - Peak Fat Burning
Kathy Smith is so upbeat, sensible, and easy to follow that if you abide by her instructions, you can't
help but get a good workout. Functionally Fit: Peak Fat Burning should definitely be one of your
keepers. Smith's tried-and-true workout method here combines six two-minute intense bursts of
aerobic activity, spliced between recovery exercises, which include loads of lunges and squats. The
pace is just right for intermediate to advanced students--the high-energy segments really fly by. The
presentation is clear and very easy to follow (it helps that the moves are very simple, even when
done at the maximum-intensity level). The session includes 6 minutes of warm-up (some of which is
vigorous enough that total beginners should plan to take it very easy), 25 minutes of the
interval-and-active-recovery workout, and 7 minutes of cool-down and stretch. True beginners,
while given options of following some low-impact moves, may find the overall intensity level too high.
The upper body doesn't get much attention here, but this video is topnotch for lower-body toning
and overall cardio fitness.
